How to Resume a Broken Download and Speed It Up With a Download Manager

The connection drops at 90 percent of a 2 GB video. Do you have to begin again? Not if the server supports resuming. AIOVideoDL does, for single files and for videos it joins with sound. This is what resuming is and how to use it.

What "resume" means

A file can be asked for in parts: "send me everything from byte 1,800,000,000 on". A server that answers such requests lets a browser or a download manager continue a file where it stopped. Programs like IDM show this as Resume capability: Yes.

Resume a download in the browser

  • Chrome and Edge: press Ctrl+J, find the download and click Resume.
  • Firefox: open the downloads panel and click the retry arrow next to the file.
  • On a phone: pull down the notification bar and tap the paused download.

The browser asks for the missing part only. If it starts from zero instead, the link has grown too old: fetch the video again and start the download from the fresh page.

Faster with a download manager

A download manager such as Internet Download Manager (IDM), Free Download Manager or JDownloader does two things a browser does not. It cuts a file into parts and loads several of them at once, which can multiply the speed on a fast line. And it retries by itself when the connection is lost.

  1. Install the download manager and its browser extension.
  2. Fetch the video on AIOVideoDL and click the size you want. Not sure about the size? See video resolution explained.
  3. The manager takes over the download. Eight connections are a good value.

Joined videos, such as YouTube in 1080p or 4K with sound, can be resumed and loaded in parts here as well. On many other sites they cannot.

If the speed stays low

  • Test your line with another large file. Often the limit is the Wi-Fi, not the server.
  • Do not run many downloads at once: they share the same line.
  • Try again later. In the evening many networks are busy.

Frequently asked questions

Why does IDM say "Resume capability: No"?

Because the server does not answer requests for parts of the file. Such a download must run in one go. On AIOVideoDL resuming is supported.

How long can I wait before I resume?

Links to videos stay valid for a few hours. Within that time a download continues; after it, fetch the video again.

Do more connections always make a download faster?

Up to a point. Above eight to sixteen connections the gain is small, and some servers slow down a guest who asks too eagerly.
