How to Download Videos and GIFs From X (Twitter)

News clips, sports moments and funny GIFs spread on X, the network that used to be called Twitter, faster than anywhere else. They also vanish quickly. To keep one, download the video from X as a file. With AIOVideoDL it takes three steps.

How to download a video from X

  1. Open the post with the video. Tap the share icon and choose Copy link.
  2. Open the X (Twitter) video downloader and paste the link.
  3. Press Download and choose a size.

Links of both addresses, x.com and twitter.com, are accepted.

Which size to choose

X stores a video in several sizes, for example 480p, 720p and 1080p. The largest looks best on a big screen. For sending in a chat, a smaller one is quicker and often enough. The size of each file is shown before you download.

Saving a GIF

What X calls a GIF is in truth a short, silent video that plays in a loop. That is why it is saved as an MP4. This is good news: the MP4 is many times smaller than a real GIF and looks better. Every chat app plays it. If you really need a GIF file, a free converter turns the MP4 into one.

If it does not work

  • Protected accounts: posts of locked accounts cannot be read from outside.
  • Sensitive content: X shows some videos only to signed-in people. These may not be reachable.
  • The post has only pictures: then there is no video to save.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download a video from a quoted or reposted post?

Yes. Copy the link of the post that contains the video itself. If you copy the link of the repost, the video is usually found as well.

Do I have to sign in to X?

No. For public posts the link is all that is needed.

Why is my GIF saved as MP4?

Because X turns every uploaded GIF into a video. The MP4 is the file X really has.
